The piano is a wonderful, universal instrument that plays a role in almost every country’s musical culture. Because of its universal appeal, many people all over the world want to learn the instrument. Many new students of piano can get impatient with themselves as there are so many conflicting piano methods and teachers who believe that they have the answer.
Is there an easier way to learning the piano? No, there isn’t and anyone who believes that is fooling themselves if they think they can play Bach Inventions or Jazz piano like George Shearing. What will happen is that the student will become very frustrated and disappointed if they don’t see that they are playing complicated pieces.
The most important thing for beginners is doing one thing at a time and you need to learn the process and the technique first. Don’t start trying to play a song before you are comfortable with the individual notes. Learning to read music is a pretty high priority for a new pianist, because once you can read the music you are one step closer to becoming proficient.
A new student would do themselves a favor if they decided to write down some steps on how they plan to master the basic skills. Most students need to push themselves so that they will gain self-confidence and achieve even more. Keep in mind that organized planning to master piano skills will help improve piano ability and self-esteem.
You are trying to learn the instrument so decide how to go about it with a goal for each day or week. How about planning to master several easy pieces if you are a beginner by a certain time. If you think it may take several days, then plan on practicing with a positive mindset.
Make sure you set aside a convenient time to practice your assignment or tutorials. Many students want to avoid any plan to get to their goal of being a good pianist who can master the basics. If want to be a competent pianist, practice does work and there is no easy way around it.
You don’t want to get burnt out by playing 16 hours per day, but you want to allow enough time to accomplish something because constant spaced repetition is critical to achieving your goals. If you need help, don’t be ashamed to enlist the help of your teacher, as they have been through exactly what you’re going through and can help. There’s nothing that you can do that they haven’t seen before as a teacher.
You do not want to become your worst enemy by being overly critical with yourself. Many beginning students have given up too early as they expected immediate results to sound like an expert pianist within a months’ time. Give up the unrealistic attitude, sit down and do some serious practicing, and keep the positive attitude while asking for your piano friends for advice and help if you need it.
