Shows like “Dancing with the Stars” have brought ballroom dancing back out into the forefront of not only mainstream entertainment, but also as a form of exercise and personal enjoyment. It’s a lot of fun, but before you can start any program of ballroom dancing, you should know some basic ballroom dance steps and terminology.

Going back a few years, swing dancing was all the rave as there were several very popular bands that featured this type of dance and music. The triple step is very popular in swing is a three step sequence based on two beats of music. When trying to keep the rhythm of the triple step you’ll often hear people use a counting method of quick-quick-slow.

East Coast swing was probably the most popular form of swing. It integrated the rock step with the triple step and would produce a movement of quick -quick-slow, quick- quick-slow, slow-slow. If you’re familiar with count often dancing you would say it like 1 & 2, 3 & 4, 5, 6.

The Carolina shag is another ballroom dance step that uses the triple step. It is similar to the East Coast shag, but replaces the rock step with the kick ball change. You will seeing that it is very common to interchange the different basic steps, thus creating a new step.

Ballroom dancing involves these basic ballroom dance steps and quite a few more. Learning steps such as the sailor step, lock step, anchor step, coaster step in Grapevine step are going to become vital in pulling off the basic moves of any dance. A key to learning all of the steps is being coordinated and having the ability of proper timing as even though they all appear similar, they are unique in their own way.

When you see the list of steps and different dances, you may start to wonder what you have gotten yourself into. You look on TV and wonder how you will ever possibly be able to perform like that. You look on the dance floor and see dozens of couples moving effortlessly as though they’re the only ones dancing. The truth is, you can do the same thing if you’re willing to try some basic ballroom dance steps.

Ballrom dancing is not something that you really want to jump right in and do, but after a few lessons you’ll be surprised at how quickly you can pick it up and be well on your way to mastering basic ballroom dance steps. There is nothing more beautiful than watching ballroom dancing performed to perfection and there is no reason why you can’t be the one performing.
