Learning to speak Italian or any new language in fact is an ideal self improvement activity. By learning all the skills needed to become bilingual in Italian you will get many other skills and benefits that you can use in other aspects of your life. One thing is true, your knowledge of your own native tongue will improve. This can make you more confident in your work and daily life.
This will make you more interesting in social situations and ultimately more popular. This is something that most people would like a little bit more of. Other than that, there is no doubt that being bilingual can translate to better job prospects and even faster advancement in your chosen career. Even if the language is not directly relevant to your profession, the achievement shows that you have discipline and commitment to a goal and employers like this.
So if you are starting out on your learning to speak Italian adventure, what should you do first ?
The first thing you want to establish is how quickly you want to become fluent. Most people answer immediately or in 3 months or something like that. But you have to take a realistic look at your lifestyle before you make a statement like that.
If you have no responsibilities and are pretty determined to learn Italian then I would suggest you get yourself on a plane to Italy and take an immersion course for a few months. Then live in Italy for a while. Get a job even. If you do all these things I would say you will have a good understanding of the language within 6 months to a year. You’ll certainly be able to chat confidently and understand what is going on.
For most people however this is a bit of a pipe dream. Most people have to hold down a job to pay the bills and this job sucks up plenty of time. This translates to being very disciplined in how you learn Italian and to dial down your goal of reaching fluency in the shortest possible time.
If this sounds like your position then you have to get some structure to your learning to speak Italian. Set up a study routine. Give yourself a given time and day when you can concentrate on Italian. No distractions or other things to do. Pure focus on the task.
Look into classes or a home study course so that you have a focal point in your learn to speak Italian objectives. As you get further into the course the lessons will get easier and you will be able to focus more intently on the subject in a shorter space of time.
As you get more experience and exposure to the language, certain exercises will become easier. For instance, once you get to a certain level you can start to watch Italian films or listen to songs or interviews in Italian. Watching a film can be a pleasant and relaxing experience so it won’t feel like a lesson. Listening to songs can be done as you drive the car so you are maximizing the time you have.
