America’s pastime has always been baseball. This trend does not seem to be stopping anytime soon. Baseball is a game played with 2 teams, each with 9 players, all taking place on a diamond. The pitcher pitches a ball to the batter who tries to hit the ball to score some runs. Batting and batting ability is a crucial skill in baseball as scoring runs is how the game is won.

Batting cages are an excellent tool in aiding to help batters develop their batting skills. A batting cage is a simple concept. An enclosed area where a ball is pitched, either by a person or a machine, and can be hit in repetition and the balls stay in the confined area for easy clean up or to be used again.

Batting cages can be indoors or outdoors and go from very simple to very complex. Outdoor cages usually are portable or have the ability to be taken down and moved with ease. Most are near on adjacent to baseball diamonds. These are used during baseball practice and are rectangle in shape. More often than not, these are used with a pitching machine. The machine is on one end and the batter stands on the other. The machine acts as the pitcher and continuously pitches the balls.

Other versions of outdoor cages are of a slightly smaller scale. There are cages that can be purchased for the backyard. There are mini cages which is a smaller version of the enclosed rectangle design. There also are solo trainers. This is basically a stand up net with a ball dangling from the top and you hit the ball at the net. The net stops the ball from flying too far and the string the ball is dangling from keeps the ball close as well.

Batting cages are also found indoors. Indoor cages are facilities set up with the back wall holding the pitching machines. There are usually many in a row. Opposite them are the areas where the batter stands. The floors of these arenas are sloped to allow the hit balls to return on their own to the area of the pitching machines. This allows the machines to be fed continuous baseballs.

Pitching machine speeds can be adjusted. These allow any batter of any skill level to be able to get the batting practice that is needed.

Baseball is a game enjoyed by all and with the aide of batting cages, will help develop batting skills.

Dave has built many backyard batting cages and likes to help by teaching people what to look for in a batting cage frame.
