Pedals seem like a very small part of the components but are a very important part. You want pedals that are quiet yet comfortable and allow you to ride for hours without any discomfort. Many cyclists use clip less pedals, which are most likely made by Look. Look is a manufacturer of clip less pedals and the first to manufacturer these handy things. When they first made their clip less pedals, they were made with either a black or red shoe plate. You many think the only difference is their color, but it’s much more than that. You may be using one and realize the other would be more beneficial and comfortable to you.
Because Look clip less pedals are the most commonly used clip less pedals, you probably have one or the other. The first ones Look made were the black pedals, which would hold your foot on the pedal soundly with no movement. An improvement to these pedals was the red clip less pedal, which allowed you to swivel your foot on the pedal. Look shoe plates allowed you flexibility in being able to adjust how close or far your foot was from the crank. They also come in large sizes so you have plenty of support for the sole of your shoe. The design was changed again making it easier for you to adjust your foot’s movement even when it was clipped in the plate.
The Look Black Plate
The first time the Look black clip less pedals were seen by the public was when Beranrd Hinault, a Tour de France winner. Hinault assisted with the makings of these pedals. When they were first made with the black shoe plate, they were known for not allowing much movement. While some cyclists liked this quality because they felt secure and provided less tendon or knee problems, others disliked them for the same reason and felt they didn’t have enough “float”. The black plate was a little more difficult to set up because it doesn’t allow movement and needs to be positioned correctly. Although there’s no room for mistakes, the set up does take longer.
The Look Red Plate
The red plate was considered a real advancement in the pedal industry because it is rounded and lets the heel rotate in and out from the crank, which many believe prevents injuries to the ankles, hips or knees. If your foot isn’t positioned exactly perfect on the plate, your foot has some play in it so setup isn’t as difficult as the black plate. Some of the newer red plates have silicon inserts, which helps with wear and tear and prevents squeaking. This also makes the plates feel more secure and solid. Although the Keo is being used by many cyclists, there’s not a lot of difference between the Keo and the traditional Look pedals. It’s all a matter of personal choice and which feels more comfortable to you.
